The ledger — claims the record answers
Opinions never enter this list, however ugly — "he's obviously guilty" is a take, "the video shows him taking the shot" is a checkable claim of fact. That's the line defamation law draws, and the ledger draws it in the same place: a claim lands here only when it asserts a fact AND a record answers it. Contradicted — a primary record or firsthand witness says otherwise. Unsupported — the record the claim invokes doesn't contain it.
